Mouse & Rodent Control in North Idaho

When the nights turn cold, mice start looking for a way inside. We find how they are getting in, deal with the ones already there, and help keep the next wave out.

Know the pest

Why mice show up every fall

The two mice North Idaho homeowners run into most are the house mouse and the deer mouse. Both spend the summer outdoors in fields, woodpiles, and landscaping, then push toward garages, crawlspaces, and wall voids as temperatures drop in September and October.

A mouse can squeeze through a gap about the width of a pencil. Garage door seals, utility and plumbing penetrations, foundation vents, and gaps around siding are the usual entry points, especially on homes that back up to open ground or timber.

Signs to watch for

  • Small, dark droppings in drawers, cabinets, or along walls
  • Scratching or scurrying in walls or ceilings at night
  • Chewed food packaging, wiring, or shredded insulation
  • Nesting material in garages, sheds, or stored boxes
  • Greasy rub marks along baseboards and entry gaps

Peak season

Fall through early winter, with activity in garages and crawlspaces year-round.

Where they hide

Wall voids, attics, crawlspaces, garages, and cluttered storage areas.

Health concern

Deer mice are the main carrier of hantavirus in the western U.S., so droppings should never be swept or vacuumed dry.

Common questions

Mice & Rodents questions

How do mice get into my house?

Through very small gaps. A mouse can fit through an opening about a quarter inch wide, so worn garage door seals, gaps around pipes and wires, foundation vents, and openings under siding are common entry points.

Are mice in North Idaho dangerous?

Deer mice can carry hantavirus, which spreads through dust from droppings and nesting material. The CDC recommends wetting droppings with a disinfectant or bleach solution and wiping them up with gloves on, rather than sweeping or vacuuming them.

Why do I see more mice in the fall?

Mice spend the warm months outdoors. As temperatures drop and food gets scarce in fall, they move toward the warmth and shelter of homes, garages, and outbuildings.
