Carpenter Ant Control in North Idaho

In forested North Idaho, carpenter ants are one of the most common ants people find inside. Finding the nest, and the moisture problem behind it, is the key to getting rid of them.

Know the pest

Why carpenter ants matter

Carpenter ants are large black or black-and-red ants that nest in wood, most often wood that is moist or already damaged. Common nest spots include window frames, roof eaves, decks, wall voids near a leak, and stumps or landscape logs outside. They do not eat wood, but they hollow it out to make room for the colony.

Damage builds slowly compared to termites, but it adds up over years. A large outdoor colony in a nearby tree or stump will often send foragers into the house, and winged ants indoors in spring usually mean a nest inside the structure.

Signs to watch for

  • Large black ants indoors, especially at night
  • Small piles of coarse sawdust (frass) below wood trim or beams
  • Winged ants inside in spring
  • Faint rustling sounds inside walls or wood
  • Ant trails between trees or stumps and the house

Common questions

Carpenter Ants questions

Do carpenter ants eat wood?

No. They tunnel through wood to build nests and push the shavings out as frass, but they feed on insects and sweets. They prefer wood that is already moist or damaged.

What does it mean if I see winged ants inside in spring?

Winged carpenter ants indoors in spring usually mean a mature colony is nesting somewhere in the structure. It is a good time to have the home inspected.

Are carpenter ants as bad as termites?

Carpenter ant damage is usually slower than termite damage, but a colony left alone for years can weaken wood. They also point to moisture problems worth fixing.
